For most people Sciatica is just a word that’s a little tough to spell, but for those living with the symptoms associated with Sciatica on a day-to-day basis it can spell a lot of pain.

Sciatica isn’t actually a diagnosis, but rather a set of symptoms that relate to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body and runs from the hip joint, deep into the buttocks, down the hip and along the back of the leg all the way to the foot. Sciatica results when the sciatica nerve is pinched or compressed, typically by arthritis or a herniated disk. Pain that radiates from the lower back and down one leg is the most common symptom, but symptoms vary based on where the nerve is affected.

Sciatica occurs most often in people between the ages of 30 and 50 and is typically just a result of general wear and tear on the body rather than from a major injury. This means that for the millions of millennials out there who are about to bravely enter their 30s, Sciatica may be there to greet them. So while Sciatica may not always be preventable, according to the American Chiropractic Association abiding by these guidelines should decrease your chances of being forced to deal with the pain in your near future.

Maintain a healthy diet and weight

Exercise regularly

Purchase a firm mattress

Maintain proper posture

Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest

If you smoke, seek help to quit

Use good body mechanics when lifting

You may have heard a lot of those mantras before, but it never hurts to hear them again, especially if you or someone you know has dealt with back pain before and knows how tough it can be.

If you’re currently experiencing back pain that you think may be stemming from your sciatic nerve, don’t hesitate to make an appointment to help ease your pain. Visit our contact page for more information on how to book an appointment with Berman Chiropractic or give us a call at 314-862-5700.

Physical Performance-

A single exposure to whole body cryotherapy greatly reduces inflammation after extensive exercise or activity and helps speed up recovery time and reduces muscle damage.

A single whole body cryotherapy (WBC) session before exercise seemed to increase antioxidants and anti-inflammatory markers when compared with control.

WBC caused a decrease in bad interleukins and a rise in good interleukins. With this, blood flow is pushed away from muscles to result in less muscle damage and faster recovery.

Norepinephrine is the only hormone that responded positively to WBC and may play a role in pain relief.

Medical Conditions-

A study confirms that patients with rheumatoid arthritis received less pain from using whole body cryotherapy compared to typical cold or ice treatments.

The effects were positive for multiple sclerosis patients by reducing the total antioxidative state better than exercise alone.

WBC is widely used to reduce pain for people with degenerative and inflammatory joint diseases and fibromyalgia.

It is suspected that the pain relief associated with WBC had positive effects on those suffering from depression and anxiety disorders.

Lung & Cardiac Function-

WBC does not affect blood pressure nor does it impair cardiac function

There are no reported harmful effects of lung function in normal individuals and only minimal effects to asthmatics which revert quickly after treatment. When exposed to WBC, asthmatics had minor bronchoconstriction for 30 minutes to 2 hours after treatment. This is prevented with a paper mask during WBC.

Spring is here and for many that means golf. One very common golf injury is low back pain (usually due to muscle strains and sprains). People who suffer from chronic and reoccurring lower back pain can be frustrated because the pain hinders their ability to play golf.

We regularly treat golfers both on the professional and amateur level. The range of motion required to swing a golf club puts a great deal of pressure on the lower back. The pressure comes from rotating and extending.

Chiropractic care is a valuable tool to help with golf injuries. Periodic spinal adjustments keep the body functioning at its peak performance and reduce the chances of being injured. Over the course of a few treatments, pain is often drastically diminished and much more manageable.

Golfers who play often as well as those who only play a few times a year know mobility is essential to a good golf game. Stiff joints and a weak back not only mess with the golf game, but can be the very issues that end up causing an injury. A regular chiropractic treatment schedule keeps the body loose and strong and helps prevent injuries.

After the cold winter, signs of spring are finally here. Winter can be rough on your body and now is a good time to schedule a chiropractic appointment to help treat or prevent problems heading into spring activities. Consider scheduling a visit with us, especially if you are having any of these four signs that you need to see a chiropractor.

1 — You Have Chronic Muscle or Joint Pain

If you have joint or back pain, or both, then it is time to get treatment as soon as possible. Living under a constant state of pain can reduce your quality of living. We can examine your body to find the root of the problem and work out a solution to treat it.

2 — You Sit All Day Long

If you follow health news, you may have heard that “sitting is the new smoking.” Prolonged sitting can, ,in fact, cause weakness in your muscles, which can eventually lead to stress injuries. Chiropractic care and therapeutic massage can help alleviate pain and promote proper sitting posture.

3 — You Were Recently Involved in an Accident

This can be a car accident, work-related injury or an accident at home. The injury could be a minor one or it could have a major underlying problem waiting to spring up. You don’t want to wait until that happens to seek help.

4 — You Have Limited Range of Motion

If you are suffering from a lack of motion within the range that you expect, it’s a good idea to get a chiropractic assessment. We can help stretch your limbs and eventually return your normal range of motion.

If you think you need to see a chiropractor, book an appointment with Berman Chiropractic & Wellness today. We offer a full range of services including adjustments, massage therapy, decompression therapy, neck & back rehab, migraine headache treatments, cryotherapy, and more.

We often combine therapeutic massage and chiropractic care to maximize the benefits that our patients receive. A massage done at a local salon or spa of course feels wonderful, and can be incredibly rejuvenating, however, chronic pain or fatigue can return rather quickly. This is because the underlying cause of pain is not being addressed. However, a therapeutic massage performed along with the medical knowledge and guidance of a chiropractor, can change the course of your rehabilitation. Therapeutic massage can be beneficial for people with chronic pain, anxiety, or illness. It can also help people manage the pain from an injury, often allowing them to heal faster.

Massage Therapy to Ease Pain

Most forms of therapeutic massage will alleviate your pain, but some forms target certain areas of the body, specifically to help you in pain management. Trigger point therapy focuses on the tight areas within your muscle tissue that can trigger pain in other parts of your body. A massage therapist uses cycles of pressure and release to alleviate the source of your pain. Cranial sacral therapy is primarily a head massage, during which the massage therapist focuses on the bones of the skull, spinal column, and sacrum. This form of massage can help alleviate the pain of TMJ, migraines, and back and neck pain.

Massage Therapy to Relieve Tension

During a Swedish massage, the massage therapist uses light to medium pressure across your body to relieve stress, boost your mood, and promote relaxation. Reflexology massage focuses on areas on the hands and feet known as reflex zones. This relieves stress and promotes relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a lot like Swedish massage, but the massage therapist addresses deeper muscle tissue, targeting knots and tightness to release chronic muscle tension.

Massage Therapy to Heal Injuries

Sports massage is typically used for athletes, but can be adapted by massage therapists to fit the needs of anyone with a chronic or temporary injury. The massage therapist will focus on the area of your body that is injured, providing you with pain relief and stimulating the tissues and muscles around the injured area. This form of therapy can promote rehabilitation in some cases.

Chiropractic care uses non-invasive, natural, and drug-free techniques to help restore your body’s physiological balance, so if you start to develop cold or flu-like symptoms, consider getting a chiropractic adjustment.

By relieving pressure on spinal nerves and acting as “reset” for sensory pathways, chiropractic adjustments help improve the ability of your central nervous system to communicate with the rest of the body. Ensuring that your spine is in a healthy alignment can maximize your central nervous system function, which is likely to help prevent you from getting sick during cold and flu season, and/or ease your symptoms and accelerate your recovery if you do become sick.

Chiropractic adjustments also improve the strength of your immune system by maximizing the flow and function of your lymphatic drainage system (which has many important nodes and ducts located right along the spine). The lymphatic system is critical for allowing your body to flush out bacteria, viruses, and other waste products that are commonly found in people who are sick. A chiropractic adjustment given as soon as cold symptoms appear can quickly improve the ability of your lymphatic system to clear out toxins and get you feeling better.

Have you recently been involved in a car accident? A car accident can result in whiplash, neck pain, back pain, headaches, fatigue, emotional discomfort and more. We can help alleviate your pain.

Sometimes an injury for a car accident can take several days before you feel it. If you are not experiencing pain, but have been in an accident, we can help keep you out of pain by preventing an injury from setting in.

When whiplash occurs, the force of impact moves tendons, ligaments, and bones quickly. Once this happens, inflammation sets in and the spinal column become misaligned. We can perform an exam to determine the degree of subluxation and an x-ray and then can perform an adjustment to help you become pain-free.

Feel free to contact us for a consultation!
